Sauna Decor Without Glue or Finish

Not all sauna decor belongs in a sauna.

That sounds obvious, right up until you start looking at the things people hang on the wall. Signs. Flags. Plaques. Little inspirational quotes about sweating out toxins, usually made with enough glue, paint, stain, and finish to make a hardware store blush.

Now, to be fair, most of that stuff is perfectly fine in a garage, cabin, man cave, or living room. But a sauna is not a living room. It is a small wooden room that gets hot on purpose. Sometimes very hot. And when heat gets involved, the materials you bring into that room start to matter.

That is the problem we set out to solve with the Cedar Sense Natural Wooden Sauna Flag.

Thousands of Flags Later, We Still Had to Rethink This One

We have been making wooden American flags for years. Thousands of them. Big ones. Small ones. Rustic ones. Custom ones. The kind of flags that look right at home above a fireplace, behind a shop counter, or hanging in a cabin where somebody probably owns more than one flannel shirt.

But when we started thinking about a flag made specifically for a sauna, we had to back up a step. A normal wooden flag usually uses some combination of glue, stain, paint, or finish. Those things help with color, assembly, and protection. Nothing wrong with that in the right setting. But inside a hot room, a sauna owner has every right to ask, “Do I really want to heat that up and breathe it in?”

Fair question.

So we built this flag differently.

No Glue. No Stain. No Finish.

The standard sauna flag is made with natural wood only. We use weathered Norway pine, white pine, and western red cedar to create the color, contrast, and character. No stain. No paint. No finish. No glue. The boards are mechanically fastened with screws and brad nails. Even the stars are precision cut with our laser engraver and nailed on, not glued.

That last part matters. It would be easier to glue the stars on. It would be faster, too. But easier and faster are not always the same as better, especially when the whole point of the product is keeping unnecessary chemicals out of the sauna.

This flag was designed for people who care about what goes inside their hot room. Traditional sauna, barrel sauna, cabin sauna, outdoor sauna, indoor sauna, or infrared sauna — the idea is the same. If you want patriotic sauna decor, it should be built in a way that respects the space.

Inside the Sauna or Outside the Sauna?

Of course, there is one important distinction.

If you plan to hang the flag inside the sauna, the unfinished natural version is the way to go. If you want to hang it on the outside of the sauna, where rain, snow, sun, and moisture can get after it, you will want added protection. That is why we offer an optional oil-based polyurethane finish for exterior display. That finish is not meant for the hot room. It is meant for the outside wall, porch, changing area, or wherever the weather might have an opinion.
