How to choose a home sauna

The four decisions that matter most, in the order we walk customers through them on the phone.

Indoor or outdoor

Outdoor saunas give you the full experience, from walking out in the snow to cooling off under the stars, and they keep heat and moisture out of your house. Indoor saunas are easier to use every day and need no foundation. See outdoor saunas or indoor saunas.

Traditional or infrared

A traditional sauna heats the air, usually to 160–195°F, and you can make steam by pouring water on the stones. Infrared heats your body directly at a lower air temperature. Hybrid models give you both. Most outdoor saunas are traditional.

How big

Size for the most people you'll regularly have at once, plus one. A bigger sauna takes longer to heat, so don't oversize it by much. Then pick a heater sized to the room's volume with our heater sizing calculator.

Wood or electric heat

Wood-fired heaters need no wiring and give a softer heat with the crackle of a fire. Electric heaters are cleaner and easier to control, and most need a 240V circuit. Ask us which heaters fit any sauna you're looking at.

Rather just talk it through?
