Cedar saunas and other sauna woods

Most of our saunas are built from Western Red Cedar, the classic sauna wood. It stays comfortable to the touch, resists rot and smells great. We also carry thermowood (heat-treated spruce or aspen) for a modern, darker look, plus aspen and hemlock for people who want little or no scent. Compare them in white cedar vs red cedar and cedar vs thermowood.

Pick the right size

Go by how many people will use it at once, then size up one if you like to lie down. A 4 to 6 person sauna is the sweet spot for most families.

Kit or fully assembled

Kits cost less and go together in a weekend or two. Fully assembled saunas arrive ready to use, so you just set them on a base and wire or fire the heater.

Electric or wood heat

Electric heaters are easy, clean and can run on Wi-Fi controls. Wood stoves give a classic crackle and work off-grid. Many saunas let you choose.

Common questions

Which type of sauna should I buy?

Outdoor traditional saunas give the hottest, most authentic experience. Indoor saunas fit a basement or bathroom. Infrared saunas run cooler and heat up fast. Our Sauna Finder can narrow it down in a minute.

What do I put an outdoor sauna on?

A level, solid base: compacted gravel, pavers, a concrete pad or a deck built for the weight. Each product page lists the footprint.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor sauna?

Many towns treat a small sauna like a shed, but rules vary. Check with your city or county, especially for electric work.

How long does delivery take?

It depends on the model. In-stock items ship quickly, SaunaLife models usually ship in 2 to 4 weeks, and Minnesota-built and Canadian Timber saunas usually take 6 to 8 weeks. Each product page shows its lead time.

Can I finance a sauna?

Yes. Financing is available on orders over $500, and you save 4% when you pay by check, ACH or wire.

How much does a sauna cost?

Indoor saunas start around $2,000. Outdoor sauna kits start around $4,000, fully assembled outdoor saunas around $6,500, and luxury saunas run from about $9,500 to over $60,000. Many prices don't include the heater, so budget for that and for delivery.

What is the best wood for a sauna?

Western Red Cedar is the most popular choice because it resists rot, stays comfortable to touch and smells great. Thermowood is a good modern option, and aspen or hemlock suit people who want little or no scent.

Should I get an indoor or outdoor sauna?

Choose indoor if you have space in a basement, bathroom or gym and want easy access. Choose outdoor for a traditional experience, more room and the option of a wood-burning stove.
