Sauna Heater Buying Guide
Sauna Heater Buying Guide
How to pick the right sauna heater for your room, your power and the way you like to sauna. Electric, wood-burning and gas heaters from Harvia, HUUM, Saunum, Narvi, Cozy Heat, Scandia and SaunaLife, explained by the Cedar Sense team in Waubun, Minnesota.
Step 1: Size the heater to your room
Heaters are rated by the room volume they can heat, in cubic feet. Measure length × width × height. Then add about 50 cu. ft. for every square foot of glass, and a little more for bare stone, tile or a room that isn’t well insulated. Pick a heater whose range covers your number, ideally near the middle.
Our heater sizing calculator does the math for you.
| Up to about 175 cu. ft. | About 3 to 4.5 kW. Small 1 to 2 person rooms |
|---|---|
| 175 to 300 cu. ft. | About 4.5 to 6 kW. Typical 2 to 4 person home sauna |
| 300 to 450 cu. ft. | About 6 to 8 kW. Larger family saunas and most barrels |
| 450 to 650 cu. ft. | About 8 to 11 kW. Big barrels, cabins and saunas with glass |
| 650 cu. ft. and up | 12 kW and up, or a large wood stove. Commercial and group saunas |
- Always check the exact range on the heater page
- Glass fronts and panoramic windows need a bigger heater
- Undersized heaters run constantly and never get hot enough
Electric sauna heaters
Electric heaters are the easiest to live with: flip a switch or tap your phone and the sauna is ready in about 30 to 60 minutes. Most run on a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Some have controls built in; others need a separate wall control like the Harvia Xenio or HUUM UKU.
- Budget for stones and, if needed, a control
- Wi-Fi controls let you preheat on the way home
- Bigger stone loads give softer, longer-lasting heat

Stainless Cilindro tower heater for Harvia Xenio or Fenix Wi-Fi controls. 6 to 10.5 kW for rooms up to 636 cu. ft.
Wood-burning sauna stoves
Nothing beats the crackle of a wood fire. Wood stoves need no electricity, which makes them a favorite for cabins, lake saunas and off-grid builds. Plan for a chimney, a non-combustible floor and the safety clearances in the manual. Some stoves feed through the wall so you can load wood from a changing room.
- Pick a chimney kit with the stove, or plan your own
- Through-wall (external feed) keeps ash out of the hot room
- Use dry hardwood split to the stove’s log length
Propane and natural gas heaters
Gas heaters run on propane or natural gas, so they work where electric service is limited or expensive. Fixed gas heaters must be installed by a licensed professional to local code. Portable propane heaters like the SaunaLife Titan are a great match for sauna tents and small off-grid saunas.
- Ventilation requirements are strict, so follow the manual
- A 20-lb tank runs a portable heater for hours
- No heating elements to replace
Stones, controls and the extras
Most heaters ship without stones, and many electric heaters need a control. Each heater page lists exactly what is included. Use stones made for sauna heaters, in the size and weight your heater calls for, and restack them about once a year.
- HUUM heaters always need a UKU control
- HUUM heaters over 12 kW also need the UKU extension box
- Split-face stones give more steam, rounded stones softer steam

Sauna heater FAQs
What size sauna heater do I need?
Measure your room in cubic feet, add about 50 cu. ft. per square foot of glass, and choose a heater whose listed range covers that number. Our heater sizing calculator does the math.
Electric or wood-burning: which is better?
Electric is easier day to day and can be controlled by Wi-Fi. Wood gives a classic fire and works off-grid. Both make great löyly; it comes down to your power, your site and your taste.
Do I need an electrician for an electric sauna heater?
Yes. Most electric heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit, and a licensed electrician should size the breaker and wire it.
How long does a sauna heater take to heat up?
Most electric heaters reach temperature in about 30 to 60 minutes. Wood stoves take about 45 to 60 minutes depending on the room and the weather.
Are sauna stones included with the heater?
Usually not. Each heater page shows how many pounds of stones it needs and lets you add them.
How long do sauna heaters last?
A quality heater lasts many years. Electric elements are replaceable, and restacking the stones each year helps the heater run better and last longer.
