Cedar Saunas

Best Barrel Saunas of 2026: Picks for Porches, Changing Rooms, Wood Heat and Cold Winters

Short answer: for most backyards, the best barrel sauna is a fully assembled 6-person cedar barrel with a porch or a changing room, heated by a wood stove or a 6 to 9 kW electric heater. Our top pick is the Setri 6-person cedar barrel (6′ x 8′, from $8,490, or $9,390 with a Harvia electric heater), built in Northern Minnesota and delivered assembled. If you’d rather build it yourself and save money, the SaunaLife E7 kit (4-person, from $5,190) is the best value.

We’re Cedar Sense, a family sauna business in Waubun, Minnesota. We sell every sauna on this list, so we only picked barrels we carry and have seen up close. Good barrels from other brands exist too (Almost Heaven, Dundalk LeisureCraft and Redwood Outdoors are the big names), and the advice on what to look for below applies to any brand.

Best barrel sauna overall: Setri 6-Person Cedar Barrel

The Setri 6-person barrel is our most popular sauna. It’s 6′ x 8′ with two-tier benches, built from 1.2-inch Grade A knotty Western Red Cedar in Northern Minnesota, and it arrives fully assembled on a treated base, so there’s no kit to put together. Setri adds things many barrels skip: a flat cedar floor with screened drains, winged roof edges that shed water, and three coats of finish. It’s $8,490 with no heater, $8,990 with Setri’s external wood stove and $9,390 with a Harvia KIP electric heater.

Best barrel sauna with a porch

A front porch gives you a shaded place to cool down between rounds and keeps towels and robes dry. Our pick is the Setri 6-person with porch (6′ x 10′, from $8,490). Setri also builds a 4-person with porch (6′ x 8′, from $7,490), a wider 7′-wide 6-person with porch (7′ x 8′, from $9,490) and an 8-person with porch (7′ x 10′, from $10,490). If you want a kit instead, the Canadian Timber Tranquility has an 18-inch porch with two benches (from $6,990).

A porch adds about 2 feet of length, so measure your spot before you choose.

Best barrel sauna with a changing room

A changing room is a separate small room in front of the sauna room. It’s where you leave clothes and phones, and in winter it’s a warm place to change instead of a cold yard. Our pick is the Setri 6-person with changing room: an 8-foot sauna room plus a 4-foot changing room (6′ x 12′ overall, from $12,490). For bigger groups there’s the 8-person with changing room (7′ x 12′, from $14,490) and the 8-person with changing room and porch (7′ x 14′, from $14,490).

Best wood-fired barrel sauna

Wood heat gives the soft, steamy heat many people grew up with, and it works without electricity at a cabin or lake. Every Setri barrel except the 2-person can be wood-fired. We like the external wood stove best: you feed it from outside, so wood, ash and smoke stay out of the hot room. It’s only $500 more than the no-heater price, so a 4-person is $7,990 and a 6-person is $8,990. If you want to watch the fire, choose the internal IKI wood stove (from $11,390 on the 4-person).

Before you choose wood, check local burn rules and your homeowner’s insurance, and keep the clearances in the stove manual.

Best barrel sauna for cold climates

For long, cold winters we recommend a barrel built where it’s cold. Setri barrels are built in Northern Minnesota with thick 1.2-inch cedar staves, roof edges that shed snow and water, and a flat floor with drains. Our cold-climate pick is the Setri 8-person with changing room and porch (from $14,490): the changing room gives you a sheltered place to change, and the porch keeps snow off the door. For a smaller budget, the 6-person with changing room (from $12,490) does the same in less space.

In the cold, size the heater up rather than down, keep the sauna on a raised, level base so snowmelt drains away, and choose a wood stove if your power goes out in storms.

Best 4-person barrel sauna

If you want it delivered ready to use, get the Setri 4-person (6′ x 6′, from $7,490). If you’re handy and want to save, the SaunaLife E7G kit (from $6,190) has a full glass front wall, 1.65-inch Thermo-Spruce staves and a 6’5″ interior height. Two people can build it in about a day.

Best budget barrel sauna kit

The SaunaLife E7 (4-person, from $5,190) is the best value we sell. It’s built from Thermo-Spruce, a heat-treated wood that holds up outdoors and needs little upkeep, with curved Thermo-Aspen benches and Wi-Fi LED lighting. It runs on an electric heater you choose separately. For just two people, the SaunaLife E6 starts at $4,390 and is only 59 inches long.

Kit or fully assembled?

A kit costs less and ships faster, but you build it: plan a full day with two people, plus time for the electrical hookup. A fully assembled barrel costs more but arrives ready, needs only a level base, and skips the risk of a gap or leak from a rushed build. If you’re comfortable with tools and have a helper, a kit is a good deal. If not, or if it’s a gift, get it assembled. We deliver Setri barrels fully assembled anywhere in the USA with our own team.

What to look for in any barrel sauna

  • Stave thickness. Thicker staves hold heat better and stay tight. Look for about 1.2 inches or more.
  • Wood. Western Red Cedar smells great and resists rot. Thermowood (heat-treated spruce or aspen) is stable and low-maintenance. Both work well outdoors.
  • Floor. A flat floor with drains is easier to stand on and clean than a curved one.
  • Roof. Shingles or metal protect the staves from sun and rain and add years of life.
  • Heater size. Match the heater to the room. Our heater sizing calculator helps.
  • Base. Keep it off the ground on a level base of pavers, gravel or a deck.
  • Who stands behind it. Ask who to call if something goes wrong after delivery.
