How to Start a Mobile Sauna Business

How to start a mobile sauna business

Mobile saunas are popping up at lakes, breweries, farmers markets, ski hills and backyard parties all over the country. We’ve helped a lot of people get into the business, and we’ve built mobile saunas for families who just want to take their sauna to the cabin. If you’re thinking about starting one, here’s what goes into it.

Our real numbers

We run our own mobile sauna rental here in Minnesota. These are our actual numbers, and every area is different:

What we charge$240 a day
Bookings2 to 4 a month
Biggest costInsurance. If you take it to events, those costs can get spendy.
Payback target12 to 24 months
Biggest surpriseHow much people love it the moment they see it, and how many have never heard of a mobile sauna

Set your price from your payback goal

Don’t just copy someone else’s price. Decide how fast you want to pay off the sauna, then set your daily price to get there.

Monthly income = daily price × bookings a month. Months to pay off = what you spent ÷ (monthly income − monthly costs).

For example, 4 bookings a month at $240 is $960 a month. On a $14,200 setup, that’s about 15 months before insurance and other costs, and longer once you take those out. If your number comes out well past 24 months, raise your price or plan for more bookings.

  • About 12 months means you kept costs low and didn’t put much back into the business.
  • About 24 months means you used more capital to build the business, like extra equipment, marketing or a second sauna.

Our sauna rental income calculator runs these numbers for you.

Because so many people haven’t seen a mobile sauna before, most of your marketing is just letting people see it: park it where people pass by, post short videos of the steam and the cold plunge, and do a pop-up or two.

Pick your business model

Most mobile sauna businesses use one or more of these:

  • Rentals and drop-offs. You deliver the sauna to a customer’s home, cabin or event, they use it for a day or a weekend, and you pick it up.
  • Pop-up sessions. Park at a lake, beach, brewery or market and sell timed sessions, often with a cold plunge or the lake right there.
  • Private bookings. Birthday parties, bachelorette weekends, corporate wellness days and sports teams.
  • Memberships. Regular customers pay monthly for a set number of sessions at your usual spots.

Rentals keep things simple. Pop-ups take more of your time but can bring in more per day and build a local following.

The equipment

The sauna and trailer

You can start with a complete mobile sauna package, or build your own sauna on a trailer. Hydraulic drop trailers lower to the ground so the sauna sits low and steady at each site. Crank-down trailers do the same thing by hand and cost less.

See our complete mobile sauna packages, from a single barrel on a trailer to setups with a cold plunge and shower.

The heater

Heat is the big decision for a mobile sauna, because you won’t always have power where you park:

  • Wood needs no power and gives customers the classic experience. You’ll haul firewood and manage the fire.
  • Propane needs no electric service and is easy to run all day.
  • Electric is the easiest to control, but you’ll need a hookup at the site or a generator big enough to run it.

More on each type in our sauna heater guide.

Power for the extras

Lights, a speaker, a chiller for a cold plunge or an electric heater all need power. A dual-fuel inverter generator handles it at sites without hookups.

Cold plunge, changing room and towels

Customers expect somewhere to cool off and somewhere to change. A cold plunge or the lake, a pop-up changing tent, and a stack of good towels go a long way. Read our cold plunge buying guide for options.

From our shop: we build and deliver mobile saunas ourselves, and Mike often drives them to customers out of state with his own truck. We’ve helped start a lot of mobile sauna businesses, and we’ve built mobile saunas for personal use too. You can see some of them on our projects page.

Your startup checklist

  1. Check local rules. Ask your city or county about business licenses, health department rules for public bathing, fire rules for wood or propane, and where you’re allowed to park.
  2. Get insurance. Talk to an agent about general liability for a mobile sauna business, and use a signed waiver.
  3. Find your spots. Lake access, breweries, campgrounds, gyms and event venues are common partners.
  4. Set up online booking so people can reserve a time slot and pay ahead.
  5. Write safety rules for every session: time limits, water, no alcohol before sauna, and cold plunge guidance.
  6. Plan your season. Winter is prime time for sauna in cold states. Summer pairs well with lakes and plunges.
  7. Market it with photos. Steam, snow and lakes make for great social posts.

Mobile sauna business questions

How much can you charge for a mobile sauna rental?

We charge $240 a day for our mobile sauna in Minnesota. Set your own price by working back from how fast you want to pay off the sauna, usually 12 to 24 months.

How long does it take to pay off a mobile sauna?

Aim for 12 to 24 months. Closer to 12 means you kept costs low and didn’t put much back into the business. Closer to 24 means you spent more capital building the business.

What is the biggest cost of a mobile sauna business?

Insurance, for most rentals. If you take the sauna to events, event costs can add up fast.

How many bookings does a mobile sauna get?

Our own mobile sauna gets 2 to 4 bookings a month at $240 a day. Yours will depend on your area, your price and how many people see it.

What kind of heater is best for a mobile sauna?

Wood and propane are popular because they need no electric hookup. Electric works well if you’ll have power at your sites or bring a large enough generator.

Do I need a special trailer?

You need a trailer rated for the sauna’s weight. Drop trailers lower the sauna to the ground at each site, which makes it steadier and easier to get in and out of.
