Sauna Heater
Sizing Calculator
Enter a few details about your sauna and we’ll help estimate the heater size you need based on the space you’re trying to heat.
Designed to help narrow your heater options before you buy. Final heater selection should always be confirmed against the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact heater model.
Before We Calculate
Heater Sizing Is About More Than Just Room Size.
Two saunas with the same dimensions can require different heater capacities. Glass, uninsulated surfaces and the construction of the sauna can all increase the amount of space your heater effectively needs to heat.
Measure the Sauna
We start with the interior length, width and ceiling height to calculate the actual cubic volume of your sauna room.
Account for Heat Loss
Glass doors, large windows, masonry, concrete and other uninsulated surfaces make the heater work harder. We account for those surfaces before recommending a heater range.
Match the Heater
Once we determine the adjusted sauna volume, we can narrow the heater size and show you Cedar Sense heater options designed for that range.
A heater that is too small may struggle to bring the sauna to temperature. Bigger is not automatically better either. The goal is to choose a heater whose manufacturer-rated sauna range properly matches your room.

What This Means
Look for a heater rated for this sauna volume.
Because you selected an outdoor sauna in a cold northern climate, we recommend choosing a heater where your adjusted volume sits comfortably inside the manufacturer's rated range rather than right at its maximum limit.
Match This Volume to an Actual Heater
We'll use your adjusted sauna volume to compare compatible HUUM, Harvia and Saunum heater options.
This calculator is a sizing guide, not a substitute for the installation manual or manufacturer specifications. Always confirm the exact heater's rated sauna volume, required clearances, electrical requirements and installation instructions before purchasing or installing.

Heaters Worth Considering
Based on your adjusted sauna volume of 0 ft³ , these are some of the heater options we believe deserve your strongest consideration.
What's the Difference?
Three Brands. Three Different Approaches.
Correct sizing comes first, but the sauna experience can feel different depending on the heater you choose.
HUUM heaters put a large amount of exposed sauna stone at the center of the design. They're an excellent fit when appearance, softer steam and smart controls matter.
- Large stone capacity
- Modern European design
- UKU / Wi-Fi control options
- Great focal-point heater
Harvia offers classic Finnish sauna heating across a very broad range of sizes. It's often the practical choice when simplicity, reliability and traditional sauna performance are priorities.
- Long-established Finnish brand
- Wide range of heater sizes
- Traditional sauna feel
- Strong value options
Saunum takes a different approach by actively circulating and mixing the sauna air. The goal is more even heat from head to toe and a softer, more comfortable sauna climate.
- Integrated air-mixing technology
- More even temperature distribution
- Large stone capacity
- Premium sauna experience

What Else Do I Need With My Heater?
The heater is the heart of the sauna, but depending on the model you choose, you may also need controls, sauna stones, electrical components and installation accessories.
Heater Controls
Some sauna heaters include built-in controls, while others require a separate control system. Premium controls can also add Wi-Fi, scheduling and remote operation.
Sauna Stones
Stone capacity varies dramatically between heaters. Some compact wall-mounted heaters use a relatively small amount, while large HUUM and Saunum heaters may hold hundreds of pounds of stone.
Electrical Requirements
Electric sauna heaters may require dedicated wiring, specific voltage, breaker sizing and other electrical components based on the heater and control system.
Installation & Safety
Every heater has required clearances and installation rules. Depending on the setup, you may also need mounting hardware, heat shields, guards, chimney components or other accessories.

Choosing Your Heat Source
Electric or Wood-Fired?
Both can create an excellent traditional sauna experience. The better choice usually comes down to convenience, property setup, operating style and the experience you want.
Convenient + Controlled
Electric Sauna Heater
Electric heaters are popular for homeowners who want straightforward operation, predictable heat and the ability to control the sauna with minimal effort.
- Easy everyday operation
- Precise temperature control
- Wi-Fi and smart controls available on many systems
- No firewood storage or ash cleanup
- Strong choice for homes, Airbnbs and frequent use
Traditional + Ritual
Wood-Fired Sauna Heater
Wood-burning sauna heaters appeal to people who enjoy the ritual of building a fire and want a more traditional, off-grid or cabin-style sauna experience.
- Traditional wood-fired experience
- Great fit for cabins and lake properties
- Can work where large electrical service is unavailable
- Fire becomes part of the sauna ritual
- Available in a range of room-volume sizes

Sauna Heater FAQ
Questions About Sauna Heater Sizing?
Heater sizing can feel complicated. These are some of the most common questions Cedar Sense hears when customers are choosing an electric or wood-fired sauna heater.
What size sauna heater do I need?
Start with the interior cubic volume of the sauna by multiplying length × width × ceiling height. Then account for glass, masonry and other uninsulated surfaces that increase the effective volume the heater needs to handle.
Use the Cedar Sense Sauna Heater Sizing Calculator above to estimate your adjusted sauna volume, then choose a heater whose manufacturer-rated sauna range includes that volume.
Does a glass sauna door affect heater sizing?
Yes. Glass does not insulate the sauna like a properly insulated wall, so it increases the effective volume used when sizing the heater.
Include the square footage of glass doors, windows and other large uninsulated surfaces when using the calculator.
Is it better to oversize a sauna heater?
Bigger is not automatically better. The goal is to select a heater whose rated sauna-volume range properly matches your adjusted room volume.
For outdoor saunas in very cold climates, it can make sense to avoid selecting a heater where your sauna sits right at the maximum end of its rated range. The exact heater should still be selected according to the manufacturer's sizing requirements.
How many kilowatts should my electric sauna heater be?
Kilowatt requirements depend on the sauna's effective volume, construction and the specific heater manufacturer. A common starting benchmark is approximately 1 kW for each cubic meter of properly insulated sauna volume, but this should not replace the heater manufacturer's rated room range.
That's why our calculator displays both an approximate kW benchmark and the adjusted cubic-foot volume.
How long should a sauna take to heat up?
Warm-up time varies based on heater size, sauna construction, insulation, outdoor temperature, stone mass, ventilation and the temperature you want to reach.
A properly sized heater should bring the sauna up to temperature efficiently without having to operate at its absolute limit every time you use it.
Which is better: HUUM, Harvia or Saunum?
There isn't one best heater brand for every sauna. Harvia is a strong choice for traditional Finnish-style heating and straightforward operation. HUUM is especially attractive when design, large stone capacity and smart controls are important.
Saunum takes a different approach by combining the heater with air-mixing technology designed to create a more even temperature throughout the sauna.
The best choice depends on your room size, desired experience, controls, budget and installation requirements.
Do sauna stones come with the heater?
It depends on the specific heater package. Some heaters may include stones while others require them to be purchased separately.
Stone requirements can vary dramatically between models, especially with large stone-capacity heaters. Always confirm the required quantity and stone type for the heater you select.
Do I need a separate sauna heater controller?
Some heaters have built-in controls while others require an external control system. Depending on the brand, upgraded controls may add features such as Wi-Fi, scheduling and remote operation.
Always confirm which control system is compatible with the exact heater before ordering.
What electrical service does an electric sauna heater require?
Electrical requirements depend on the heater's voltage, kilowatt rating, control system and installation configuration. Larger sauna heaters can require substantial dedicated electrical capacity.
Have a qualified electrician review the heater's wiring diagram and specifications before installation.
Can I install an electric sauna heater myself?
Physical mounting may be straightforward on some heaters, but the electrical connection and controls must follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable electrical codes.
Cedar Sense recommends using a qualified electrician for electrical work and verifying all required heater clearances before installation.
Is a wood-fired sauna heater better for an outdoor sauna?
Not necessarily. Both electric and wood-fired heaters can work very well in outdoor saunas.
Electric heaters offer convenient operation and temperature control, while wood-fired heaters provide a traditional fire experience and can be attractive for cabins, lake homes and properties where sufficient electrical service is unavailable.
Can Cedar Sense help confirm my heater before I order?
