What Is Thermowood (Thermal Modification)?

Thermowood is a natural wood-enhancement process that uses heat, steam, and pressure to permanently improve how wood performs in high-heat sauna environments—without chemical treatments.

Thermowood thermal modification infographic explaining how heat and steam improve wood stability and durability
Thermowood enhances wood using only heat and steam—no chemical additives.

How is Thermowood made?

Thermowood is produced by heating wood in a controlled chamber using high temperatures with steam and pressure. This permanently alters the wood’s structure to improve stability in hot, humid conditions.

Is thermally modified wood chemical-free?

Yes. Thermal modification uses no chemical preservatives—only heat and steam— making it a clean, natural process ideal for sauna environments.

Why is Thermowood ideal for saunas?

Saunas experience extreme heat and moisture swings. Thermowood is more dimensionally stable, water-resistant, and comfortable than untreated wood.

Does Thermowood resist warping and swelling?

Yes. Thermal modification reduces the wood’s ability to absorb moisture, helping it resist warping, swelling, and shrinkage over time.

How does Thermowood affect moisture content?

The process lowers the equilibrium moisture content of the wood, making it better balanced for repeated sauna heating cycles.

Will Thermowood last longer in a sauna?

In most sauna applications, yes. Thermowood offers increased resistance to decay, pests, and fungi—making it a smart long-term investment.

Shipping & Flat-Rate Freight

Thermo-Aspen wood varies in length, weight, and dimension and qualifies for flat-rate shipping to the contiguous United States. Freight quotes can be provided for shipments to Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii. Packaging and shipping method are selected to keep your order protected and as cost-efficient as possible.

Important: How Shipping Is Paid (Please Read)

Wood orders require special packaging and freight scheduling, so shipping is not charged at checkout. After you place your order, our team will contact you with the flat-rate freight amount and a payment link to complete shipping before your order ships.

  1. Place your order for your Thermo-Aspen wood.
  2. We’ll reach out after purchase to confirm delivery details and collect the flat-rate freight fee.
  3. Bundle and save: If you add sauna heaters, doors, vapor barrier, lighting, or accessories to the same order, we will deduct the shipping value of those items from your wood freight cost whenever possible (often improving margins and lowering total freight).

Flat-Rate Freight Schedule (Contiguous U.S. • Boards up to 8’)

Boards up to 8’ (and under ~40 pieces) typically ship via FedEx Ground in a reinforced carton. Larger quantities up to 8’ often ship LTL (liftgate) on a custom skid/pallet. Final method depends on board quantity, profile, weight, and order composition.

  • Under 19 boards $195.00
  • 20–39 boards $395.00
  • 40–99 boards $495.00
  • 100–299 boards $695.00
  • 300–499 boards $895.00
  • 500–799 boards $995.00
  • 800–999 boards $1,295.00

Note: On occasion, remote delivery areas may not qualify for these rates. We strongly recommend confirming delivery considerations with your client/site before ordering to avoid delays or unexpected surcharges.

Important About Wooden Material Shipments

  • Materials are packaged to arrive safely and at the most cost-effective rate.
  • The longest board determines the flat-rate freight category.
  • Wooden materials over 8’ may incur significant surcharges because carriers favor smaller, easier-to-handle skids. (If you need 10’ lengths, we’ll confirm the best freight option after purchase.)
  • Combination orders (wood + heaters/doors/accessories) are reviewed for the best packaging method and often create shipping efficiencies. Some items may ship on a secondary pallet for easier offloading.

About This Delivery

Most wood orders require delivery by special appointment and arrive on a pallet. The driver is responsible for curbside delivery only. Prior to shipping, we may contact you to confirm shipment details and discuss any site conditions that could complicate delivery or create additional freight charges. Our goal is to ensure your project’s success.
