This red and yellow flag was created by Le Dan Ve, and adopted by the South Vietnamese on June 2, 1948. This was when both the North and South were still controlled by the French. However, in 1976, the red flag of North Vietnam was adopted as the official ‘unified’ flag of Vietnam.
The South Vietnam flag meaning includes the colors of yellow and red, which symbolizes the sun, fire, light, and civilization. It represents the southern lands under the “Later Heaven” order. This flag has become a symbol for anti-communism, U.S. imperialism, democracy, and recollection of the past.
This flag has many interpretations of what the representation of it really is. To some, the three horizontal red lines represent the blood that was lost during the struggle for independence. Another idea is that the three lines represent the North, Central, and South Vietnam.
The state of South Vietnam no longer exists, but this flag is still used among other countries and private citizens and is referred to as the ‘Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag‘.
The South Vietnam flag fell to communism in April of 1976. In South Vietnam, the government was replaced with armed forces and there were people located in the South that did want them and the North to be united. These people were known as Viet Cong, and even though they were from the South, they fought against the army of the South.

In 1965, America sent our troops to South Vietnam to help fight against the Viet Cong and the North. America refers to this war as the Vietnam War, but many Vietnamese people call it the American War. In 1974, a ceasefire was signed and the American troops were taken out.
Then, in 1975, North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam, in which the South surrendered and the two became known as the ‘Socialist Republic of Vietnam’.

Many politicians and other people own or buy the South Vietnam flags. Any person that dishonors the flag is subjected to harassment, protests, or boycotts. There seems to be an unwritten rule that says the flag can’t be stylized through art.
Some have said “This is what represents us as Vietnamese people. We are proud of who we are, and no one can take away our beliefs.”
